Brendon McCullum was dismissed off the first ball of the session after the Tea interval. He was out for 41 holing out a gentle loosener from Ben Stokes to Mark Wood at mid off. Latham and McCullum were batting well after Ross Taylor was out for a score 20. McCullum had got off the mark with a maximum and was always looking for quick runs. Taylor and Latham added 66 runs for the third wicket after James Anderson had reduced New Zealand to two for two, dismissing both Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson for a duck. Earlier, rain washed away the first session after which England won the toss and elected to bowl first on a cloudy morning. England were unchanged while New Zealand handed a Test debut to Luke Ronchi who replaced Corey Anderson.
