The crowd at Leeds were enthralled by a fabulous hundred from the bat of local boy Adam Lyth and would have expected more from other local boys Joe Root and Gary Ballance. However, they have both fallen in quick succession after New Zealand opted to take the second new ball. Scorecard: England vs New Zealand, 2nd Test at Headingley
Ballance showed promise early on, while the old ball was still in play but was dismissed by Trent Boult when the new ball was taken. Boult’s partner-in-crime, Tim Southee, then struck by getting Root to nick behind, where Luke Ronchi took a spectacular catch. Live Updates: England vs New Zealand, 2nd Test at Headingley
New Zealand will hope to make up for the toil they endured early on by getting a couple more scalps with the new cherry. Currently Ben Stokes and Ian Bell are battling the new-ball onslaught.
