Former South African all-rounder Clive Rice, who passed away earlier last month, was honoured by South African beer company Castle Beer as a tribute. Rice was South Africa’s first ODI captain after their apartheid ban, and while his international career was eaten up by their years of exile, he was a legendary figure for Nottinghamshire in the Country championship. Combining with the great Sir Richard Hadlee, the duo terrorised batsmen for years opening bowling for the Notts. He also Nottinghamshire to their first county championship in 52 years and was one of the stars in the Packer matches. Rice was also a fantastic batsman, with numbers suggesting that he was the best batsman among Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Hadlee, and himself. Rice, who had been suffering from a brain tumour, also captained the Transvaal ‘mean machine’ which dominated South Africa’s domestic competitions during the 1980s. (With inputs from AFP)
