Sri Lanka ended Day One of the second Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton at 264 for 7. Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews is still unbeaten on 63. He will be key if Sri Lanka are to post a score in excess of 300. Sri Lanka lost three quick wickets right at the end of Day One, including the big wicket of Milinda Siriwardana, who was dismissed for 62. He put on 138 runs for the fifth wicket with Mathews, which had put Sri Lanka in command. With New Zealand having bowled only 67 overs, there is a high possibility that the Day Two will begin a few minutes before time just to make up for the lost overs. Sri Lanka had made a decent start to their innings. Kusal Mendis looked to be in good touch, but he feel for 31. His opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne was the first wicket to fall for 1. A 71-run stand between Dinesh Chandimal and Udara Jayasundera ensured that Sri Lanka found some sort of stability in their innings, but both of them were dismissed just after linch, with Chandimal falling threes short f his third consecutive century in the series. New Zealand seamers found it tough through the day and have not made the best use of the green top as one expected. However, Tim Southee and Trent Boult picked up two wickets apiece, with Doug Bracewell getting one. There were two run-outs in the innings, to add to Sri Lanka’s woes. On Day One, New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bowl first. Both teams did not make a single change to their playing XI.
