The play started half-hour before schedule on Day Two as New Zealand managed to get only 67 overs in on Day One as rain had stopped play. New Zealand will be delighted with the position they have put themselves in this Test and will be looking to add more runs when play resumes after lunch. Sri Lanka on the other hand need a couple of quick wickets. New Zealand have  strong batting line-up with the likes of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum to follow. They will not find it easy to get through all of them.

On Day One, New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bowl first. Both teams go into this match with the same team that played at Dunedin. New Zealand lead the series 1-0, following their 122-run win in the first Test at Dunedin.

Sri Lanka 292 (Angelo Mathews 77, Milinda Siriwardana 62; Tim Southee 3 for 63, Trent Boult 2 for 51) lead New Zealand 61 for 0 (Martin Guptill 39*, Tom Latham 21*) by 231 runs.
