Sri Lanka struck back soon after lunch to restrict New Zealand to 133 for 5 at tea. Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers as he managed to get three wickets in the session. New Zealand still trail Sri Lanka by 159 runs. He troubled the batsmen with this short deliveries and set the trap very well to dismiss the Kiwi batsmen. The session started off on a bright note with Martin Guptill getting two boundaries off the very first over after lunch. Tom Latham too hit a boundary off the second ball he faced. First to go was Latham for 28. He chipped a ball straight to the fielder at leg gully after he got off to a good start. New Zealand’s most dependable batsman Kane Williamson was the next one to be dismissed for just one. A short ball from around the wicket forced Williamson to pull the ball, but he mistimed it and Suranga Lakmal at deep square leg took a good catch. Things went from bad to worse for New Zealand as Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor were sent back to the pavilion. The quick fall of wickets as restricted New Zealand’s run-flow as they going at a good pace. Sri Lanka will be extremely happy with their performance and will want to pick up a few more wickets after tea to put themselves in a much better position. Brendon McCullum was dismissed just before tea, giving Sri Lanka the advantage going into the break. Michell Santner has played well and will look to build a good partnership after tea with BJ Watling.
Sri Lanka were earlier bowled out for 292. Angelo Mathews top-scored for the visitors with 77. Milinda Siriwardana made 62. Tim Southee was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with three wickets. On Day One, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl. Both sides are going in with the same playing XI, who played in the first Test. New Zealand lead the series 1-0, following their impressive 122-run win at Dunedin.
