South Africa vs England 2015-16: James Anderson doubtful for the 1st Test

James Anderson, England’s spearhead, is doubtful to play the first Test against South Africa on Saturday in Durban. The pacer complained of some tightness in his right calf and was later taken for scans. During the practice match of against South Africa A, he bowled only five overs. The 33-year-old had also missed few matches of the Ashes due to his injury. The final reports of the scan are awaited from the medical team in England, based on which the final call will be taken with regards to Anderson’s availability. As reported on cricbuzz.com, considering the nature of the injury and the fact that Anderson has not had a great performance with bowling, it is doubtful if England would risk him for the first Test against South Africa. The schedule and gap between the first and second Test will also play a role in decision making. If Anderson does not stand fit for the Test, Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes would be considered for the seamers, while Chris Woakes will be the fourth seamer. Unless Anderson is able to get through enough overs and his proves his fitness, it is highly doubtful that England will take a chance with the spearhead or have him go under-cooked for the first Test. Joe Root, England’s vice-captain, is assured that his side can beat the world’s number one Test team away. Being aware that it is a challenge to play against South Africa, he has urged his team to play extremely well in order to win the series.
