Michael Hussey got the fairy-tale ending in his final season of the Big Bash League (BBL) prior to retirement with his side Sydney Thunder lifting the trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after beating homeside Melbourne Stars. Hussey had announced earlier in the season that this would be his last BBL season and sticks by the call. He was given a guard of honour by the players of the Melbourne Stars. According to Hussey, the time was ripe for him to call it quits from the Thunder outfit with view to give the youth in the team a better opportunity. Hussey, also known as Mr. Cricket, had planned to hang his boots last year itself but realising that the team needed some nurturing decided to postpone his retirement plans and it has paid off and how. Now Hussey leaves the team in very sound position with a trophy under their belt.

“This was part of the plan – this was all in the plan. I was actually probably going to finish last year,” Hussey told cricket.com.au. “But just through succession planning and building the squad a little bit further it was prudent to probably play one more season.

“It’s never been about me, it’s been about the club, and building the club for sustainable success. There’s no point hanging on too long. It’s a bout players will come and go from this team forever and a day, but the players and this club has to move forward and keep building,” Hussey added.
