The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was in for some harsh comments when retired judge Mukul Mudgal described it as a place for the “sharing of spoils”. According to latest reports, Mudgal slammed the board for their monopoly over the sport, as well as corruption within the body in charge of Indian cricket at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) event in New Delhi. Current as well as former cricketers were also present at the venue, with the likes of retired greats Bishan Singh Bedi and Ian Chappell as well as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir largely agreeing with his views. “Total monopoly sometimes brings in evil,” Mudgal was quoted as saying according to a report on the Hindustan Times.
Mudgal, who led a four-member panel that investigated the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, found support from the cricketers present at the venue. Bedi was reported to have described the BCCI as “incorrigible”, while Chappell chose “bully” as the appropriate term to describe the world’s richest cricket body. They however, also agreed on the notion that the board had shown signs in the recent past of cleaning their slate.
“The BCCI needs to be fixed and only then the International Cricket Council (ICC), the game’s world governing body, can function properly,” Bedi was further quoted as saying.
There were also calls on separating politics from sports, to which Mudgal said: “A cap on age and tenure for administrators as envisaged in the sports bill should be implemented in all sports bodies including the BCCI.”
